UPS Un-Interruptible power supply

The main focus here is to look at requirements for a UPS at a small remote branch or remote site.

Requirements / Ideal for remote unit's

  • Critical
    • Remotely managed through network SNMP and possibly WEB
      • Status & Events, on-line, off-line, battery problems (SNMP and TRAPS)

    • Multiple input's
      • Escom power from grid
      • Solar from panels
      • Wind ?
      • Generator set - Autostart
    • Tolerant of harsh environment - 65C and vibrations.
    • 220V output or 48V. (Cisco needs 48v Regulated)
  • Preferred
    • External battery's
      • Either modular, or capable of adding external lead-acid battery's
    • Battery management
      • Protection against damage due to full discharge
      • Measurement and reporting on quality/status/life of battery unit
  • Nice to have
    • Remote power control, or scheduled control
      • Capable of switching off certain outlets (4-6 Outlets)
    • Environmental
      • Temperature etc. that could reduce battery life.
      • Capable of operating at high temperatures e.g. 65C
    • Reporting and historical data

  • 16w - Cisco 3000 Industrial Ethernet switch - 15Watt
  • 50w - Motorola PTP300
  • 12w - Cisco 350 AP
  • ??w - Rectifier + Management
  • Total: 16w + 50w x 4 + 12w x 2 = 240w ==> 5A@48v
